The Whitlock Building - 480 South Salina Street Downtown Syracuse, New York 13202
This 49,000 sq ft building in the Heart of Downtown Syracuse 20+ years: former home to a furniture store, a movie theatre, and many other business over its 100+ year history. The building went through a full renovation and conversion into the first carbon neutral / all electric building of its kind in the area. 26 apartments and 21,000 sq ft of commercial space. The building has been highlighted by Empire State Development at their annual meeting, the NY Climate Action Council, The Alliance for a Green Economy, Syracuse University, and New York State as an example of how to design a 100+ year old building into an energy efficient construction project. Notably, the building is cited in Syracuse University’s 10-year Sustainability Plan as they renovate their own 100 year old buildings for energy efficiency.
The high ceilings of the building allowed for maximal spacial usage, so 90% of the apartments have either a loft area above the kitchen/bathroom for the loft studio units, or a full second floor for the larger 1,350 sq ft 2 bedroom units.
